Jimmy as always I really love the videos... Here are my two cents being a European player of the 90's and 00's. Firstly the gap that has reduced the most between USA v World of basketball is the athleticism... No other country could match the dream team in terms of physicality... The sport was not nearly as scientifically developed as it is now all over the world. It was played but the USA had god like athletes... And christian Latener. Only in the last decade or so the training culture and science has cought up globally. What "we" always had though was great coaching and the culture of sport scholars that is not the same in USA (my modest openion) that has allowed us to grow and be able to make a difference where possible. We may not shoot as well not fly as much but we take smart shots kind of thing. Referees, unfortunately the the level of referee in USA is allowing rule breaking, while outside the home of basketball the match officials have made it harder on players and developed their game facing tougher conditions. Lastly... Conflict. The world is a.much better place now... Still some work to do of course, but travelling is far more accessible and talent really has a chance to be both discovered and mostly allow you to reach your dream... That damned ring. Firstl

(Slovenia and Serbia were the same country until 1991) and i don't think people got that affected by drafting a foreign player. You have to take into consideration the Cold War that was going on - anything soviet related was demonic, anti-christ. So it wasn't exacly because Sabonis was foreign, more than because he was from the soviet union.

@kaurq ...I can't quite see the myopia you mentioned (:p), like I can't see anyone "arguing" here - I can only see argument placement. Anyway, Pat started playing basketball at the age of 12, that is after he moved to the US, so I guess this should settle it, considering his "originality" as an American (athlete), back in the 90ies.....

    • kaurq

      kaurq

      5 天 前

@washcloud this is a highly esoteric and myopic discussion , my intent is not to argue . He moved to USA when he was 12, you can certainly take issue with the line drawing but I feel in common parlance that is a significant and meaningful amount of time at a crucial age for developing an athlete.

    • washcloud

      washcloud

      5 天 前

@kaurq I definitely agree that it does not change Jimmy's point - however he references Ewing in his column for the 90ies where he speaks only of nationalities and not place of birth, like he spoke about the 80ies' players (he probably did have in mind that Pat was born in Jamaica, while fixing up that column). Anyway, I'd say that Ewing is as American as Americans go, since he did not fully grow up/get educated/started doing sports in his country of origin, but rather the US. That was Jimmy's point, and not some technicality like "he was born overseas (even though he soon after migrated to the US)". The whole idea was where everybody was born, raised and trained in the fundamentals of basketball, before making it to the NBA....
